Starkness, painting by Soma Mukhopadhyay (acrylic colours, 16 x 10 inches) – featured for the project “art in the time of coronavirus”

Soma Mukhopadhyay is the Principal of Bhavan Junior, Chandigarh and a National ICT awardee, 2016. This is what she has to say about her artwork :

I have named my artwork  STARKNESS . It depicts that, at this time when the human world is grappling under the threat of COVID virus, the animal world is carefree, full of vigour, smiles and enjoying the absence of the ruthless human race around it.

Through this art work i also want to depict that only self isolation can help the human race to come out of this trajectory of death and misery. In the picture, the small masked faces of human beings are depicted above the tree of life. If we look at the top right hand corner, we get to see how as we distance ourselves from the crowd, the masks automatically shed away and smiles return to the mankind. This crisis is actually teaching mankind to stay within their limits and make this world a beautiful place for all the creations of God and believe in sustainable development.
